Hi recently made a 'vanity unit from oak sleepers. A sink will be placed on top so will likely encounter water fairly regularly. I've already treated the whole thing, first with poly x wood protector and then 2 coats of the poly x hardwax oil.
Question is can I then cover it with a coat or two...
Could you describe how I'd do that Please? So hollow out a couple of sections underneath both sides, drill a hole large enough from the inside sides and use these bolts?
Great butterfly joints it is. Should I do these top and bottom do you reckon? Due to the width of the wood?
Not sure if the client will want visible butterfly joints on the top surface so would one side be sufficient?
Thank you for the advice folks. I should have explained I am having them cut to size, it's a vanity table. The table top will consist of only 2 125x250x1000mm sleepers. Legs will be made from 4 100x200x600mm sleepers. 2 legs joined together each side. I've no doubt this will be very heavy but...
Hi, similar topic to my last post, I need to join large oak railway sleepers together for a table top, was just wondering what was the best way people have found to do this? Many large Biscuit joints?
Thank you. I'll go with the osmo stuff.
Tell me there is a cheaper method of joining these things than the domino xl?? Don't get me wrong, I'd love one! but it's outwith my price range at the minute.
I'll only have time to let sit for around 2-3 weeks.
Sorry for stretching this post out but hard wax oil has been recommended as a finish to the unit? Would this be suitable in Your opinions?
Thanks again
Really appreciate all the advice folks. General consensus is to use dried out oak (I think!) trying to source this at the moment and it's proving difficult!
So the BLO is the best finish to use?
Kiln dried oak beams you mean? Or would the kiln dried wood of those mentioned be ok? Forgive my ignorance!
Planning on distressing it as wel.
If I could figure out how to attach a picture I'd upload it. Am I able to message you it?
Hi, I'm a budding furniture maker and have been asked to make a vanity unit from 'Railway sleepers'. I've done a bit of research and understand the old used sleepers have been treated with fairly toxic stuff so should not be used. General consensus I have read is that it should be new Oak...
