Well eventually got the nut off the headstock spindle. Would not budge so drilled and cut it off and made a new one.
The bearings were rough. Managed to find replacements from the local bearing shop. RHP but old stock and cost the equivalent of 80 dollar/pounds.
While the spindle was out got a...

I found 1 3/8 x 6 UNC nuts.. The first time I threaded them on there was a little of friction.
After that they were fine. That answers that concern.
Merlin,
Your idea works well. Got a few spare nuts to make some face plates and other future jigs.
Thanks to the both of you for the idea...
Well got the nut off this morning. A lot of butchering so will make a new one.
It is a right hand thread.
The shaft and bearings came out easily.
The inboard bearing is badly pitted and the outboard has marks but not as bad.
They will have to be replaced but am not looking forward to what they...
No problem. Learning is part of the game.
You gave me a very good idea to work on. :D
Could also be useful for a few jigs.
Finding the nuts here will not be that easy though.
Thanks J-G
Never thought to look at the UNC specs. For that sort of use the difference in angle would not be a problem.
Now to find a nut that size in darkest Africa :|

A good few years ago I went to a local sawmill to get boards to build fencing.
The mill was down a hill which was not that conducive to getting timber up and down.
While there spotted some old stuff in a back room - lots of bits missing.
There was a Wadkin CW (I think) and a Johnsered (sp) saw...
Hi Merlin.
Yes but still tight.
From what I can see of the bearing number and searching it seems to be a deep groove and not angular contact.
So maybe whoever changed the bearings used loctite on the nut. Am going to try heat and then some persuasion.
Will keep at it until I come right.

Got my newly acquired (1953) lathe running but the bearings are noisy.
I though of removing the shaft and cleaning them and refitting if OK otherwise replacing them.
I cannot get the locking nut off it is so tight. Made a spanner to fit over the nut but no joy.
I presume and looking at the shaft...
Thanks for all the posts and info.
Got a RS6 a few weeks ago and your info on bearing changes will help me a lot as the bearings are noisy.
Maybe just a good clean is all that is needed. Will only know when it is apart.
Also thinking that while the shaft is out to change to a multi 'V' drive...
Got 2 different grits from D Way tools.
Best thing I ever did.
Tormek got sold off, and that paid for the wheels. Now can get a sharp edge in a fraction of the time.
Way to go.
In "my opinion" the Tormek (although a great machine for straight blades) is a time consumer for turning tools .
