    Cutting back varnish

I'm using water based floor varnish on my bathroom cabinets. It's satin finish which is still quite shiny so I was thinking of cutting it back with fine sandpaper to leave a more matt finish, my question is, will this make it less waterproof?

    Jigsaw problems

I've got a makita Li cordless jigsaw that came as part of a set. Don't use it very often but every time I do it causes me problems. I'm sure this is probably down to me doing something wrong but I just cant get it to give me a square cut. Just tried to use it to cut a profile along the edge...

    Waxing thicknesser bed

Have read on a number of posts that you should wax the bed of your thicknesser to prevent stock sticking as it passes through. Liberon lubricating wax seems to be popular so I have got some of this to give it a go. My question is do I just apply and leave or do I need to polish off the excess...

    Bathroom woodwork

Been trying to finish off my bathroom for sometime now and finally getting to make some oak cabinets for the basin to sit on etc. Bought the kiln dried oak some months ago and it's been stickered and stacked in the sitting room prior to planing this weekend. (2.4m boards, 25 - 30cm width, 1...

    Thicknesser Problem

Thanks for the responses, Understand the snipe issue have read a number of the posts referring to this, do not believe this is my problem. Do not have a planer, planning to use a planing sled when I start on my oak (not made it yet). Since I was just doing a test I took a straight piece and...

    Thicknesser Problem

Recently bought a Makita 2012 to have my first go at converting sawn timber Took it out of the box for the first time yesterday to have a play with some 2x4 pine before attacking my 25cm wide oak boards and I'm having a problem getting a flat and perpendicular surface. The only options for...

    Bent my drill!

Initially thought it was just the hole saws not being correctly centered on the auger but when using it slowly with just a normal drill bit noticed that the chuck was off center slightly (could feel it brushing intermittently against my hand). Do not think it will stop the drill from being...

    Bent my drill!

I've got a makita 18v cordless set that I have always felt to be fantastic. However, I was using the drill (three speed combi) the other day with a hole saw (113mm i think) and now the chuck seems to be slightly off centre. It was my first go with a hole saw and I may have gone a little fast...

    Axminster WP 150

Does anyone have this machine and if so have anything good to say about it? I don't really have room for a planer thicknesser combo but have been looking at the makita 2012 and thought the axminster might make a good partner (can store them both away easily when not in use) Anyone got any...

    Oak Coffee Table

This looks great and is very similar to something that I am planning to have a go at (hope it looks as good!) Can I ask, how did you fix the top to the base? If the top is not solid do you still need to worry about wood movement? Sorry bit of a newbie question Cheers Graham

    Oak airing cupboard

Been reading through previous posts about hardwoods in bathrooms and most seem to think it is ok as long as you use a good finish, so I'm thinking about making mine out of oak as I'm getting some for another project. However, I am also aware that people say you should not fit solid wood floors...
