    Sentry shed build thread

I started in June, did most of the frame joinery in the evenings after work then left it for ages. Picked up a few weeks ago to finish in time for wife bday, so did all the painting and final assembly in a weekend. I work very slowly, probably 75-100 hrs in total. I'm a research scientist by...

    Sentry shed build thread

Thanks for the kind words all! Hi, more photos in the ingur link but this is the inside. The inside of the trapdoor is a large shelf, goes all the way to the back, but is only 2/3rds the width of the shed so you can still fit stuff up from underneath via the missing bit of shelf on the left...

    Sentry shed build thread

Back in June I posted here about a wood joint choice for a shed. It is finally finished so figured I'd share some photos and get some feedback. The story is my wife wanted a sentry shed she saw in a garden centre, I didn't want to pay £250 so I made her one for her birthday. Cost about £120 all...

Gloss/satin paint that doesn't turn yellow

Hi all, thanks for the comments, All internal. Can was new from B+Q, I did read about the formula being changed a few years back but this was bought approx 14 months ago. Googling reveals a watchdog article on the same brand/paint going very yellow, post EU introducing rules to limit volatile...

Gloss/satin paint that doesn't turn yellow

Good morning all, About a year ago I made the fateful mistake of buying a can of Dulux once brilliant white satinwood paint and applying it to all of the doors, frames, staircase and windowsills on the ground floor of my house. Within weeks, anything not in direct sunlight was noticeably...

    Replacement fine stone

Thanks for the responses all! I used chisels and planes straight off the norton fine for a while with no major complaints. But I do prefer the edge after a once over on the finer stone and a strop. I don't go nuts, takes like 30s on each. A closer look at the stone I need to give back reveals...

    Replacement fine stone

Afternoon all, Apologies for another sharpening thread, but I'd like some suggestions for a replacement fine honing stone. For chisels and plane irons. I currently use a Norton coarse/fine oilstone followed by a small white barbers honing stone I'm borrowing off of my brother, then a strop...

Shapton Glass or DMT. Anyone experience either stone?

I struggle to see how the sharpening method would affect edge retention. I'd be thinking about the sharpening angle and the steel hardness. On the sharpening stone thing, any reason you don't like Norton oilstones? £25 gets you a double sided coarse/fine, which is something like 60/600 grit...

    Qalo rings

I don't wear my ring often but I do take it off if I'm doing anything that might lead to hand injury. I wouldn't bother with a rubber one.

    CLeaning up epoxy.

Scrape off/dig out as much as you can first, then use acetone to remove the remaining resin. Easiest place to get acetone in normal shops is to buy cheap nail varnish remover. I hope it goes without saying to avoid the "acetone free" nail varnish remover  . Could try methylated spirit...

    Joint choice - advice appreciated

Thanks for the responses all, very much appreciated even if I am a little slow getting back to you. I know this isn't how sheds are normally built, I hack wood for fun rather than money so don't mind it taking longer. I want the frame to be external with the gaps filled with T+G boards. Similar...

    Joint choice - advice appreciated

Yeah.... It's apparently called a sentry shed. Wife saw one in a garden centre, I refused to pay £250 for it and here we are... Hers will be different, but the idea is the same.

    Joint choice - advice appreciated

Thanks, they are supporting the floor. I'd prefer to avoid screwing/nailing in to end grain as the sole form of support  .

    Joint choice - advice appreciated

Afternoon all, I'm making a very small shed (60 x 60 cm footprint), part of which requires a timber frame. I'm only using hand tools (due to a lack of power tools) and I don't have a pocket hole jig. As such, I need to join three pieces of timber together at right angles to one another, as...
