    Make your own band saw

I thought the same, whats the point? But then why would you build a table, kitchen units, any piece of furniture etc when you can quite easily buy it. A sense of self satisfaction can't be beaten. And there is no doubting, he is one talented guy!

    Timber identification

Joe, They are all the same types of wood, just I sanded the first down to bare wood to see what it was like. Its got a reddish hue to it when varnished and the end grain is very close (slow growing?). Cheers Kev

    Timber identification

Cheers Olly, Unfortunately hand planing is a no-go due to the shear amount - must be at least 100 sq m. Does anyone know how much mahogany goes for and then I could possibly offset against a new P/T (thats what I'll tell the wife anyway  ) Cheers Kev

    Timber identification

Evening all, I have got the chance of some hardwood from a disused building. I think it could be mahogany but I am not sure, I pulled up a few pieces and quickly sanded one of them, what do you think? The wood has been down for 40-50 years but I think a quick run through a P/T and it...

    Which sliding compound mitre saw?

Gary, If space is an issue, (I know that some of these machines can take up load of room) try the bosch GCM8S model. It has the same build quality and accuracy of the big boys just slightly smaller. I got this after persevering with a performance pro and it was like driving a Rolls Royce after...

    Workshop...shipping containers?

Whilst working for Her M ajesty, we lived in them down the Falkland Islands. They can be joined, windows put in etc, as for the security aspect, I suppose the same could be said of any portable building. :occasion5: Banjo

    Bedroom furniture

Mike I did a similar project in ash as well. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... highlight= I do like the look (colour and grain) of this wood, gives it a clean look. Also the custom build allows you to take full advantage of floor to ceiling height which you cannot get from off the...

    My New Router

Fecn, I am truly amazed by this thread, read through the lot from start to finish with total incredulity. I work in electronics and understand all of the hardware and software issues but its another thing to actually make such a machine. Hats off to you fella =D> Superb. Kev

    Ash coffee table finally completed

Hi Dave The oil brings out the grain marvellously. I was a bit wary when I used it on a recent ash project but the oil/wax combo looks great. banjo

    Oak skirting/architrave/door lining/door suppliers?

I normally buy skirting/architrave from local Travis Perkins. 4" Oak runs at roughly £4 per metre and they will profile for you.

Extending Newel Post !!!! with finished photos !!!!

I agree with Lugo, replace the bottom one and try to find a mid newel connector for the top. I recently fitted a beech Fusion staircase and it works a treat on the top newel. http://www.stairpartsonline.co.uk/catlist.php?cat=357
