Joe, They are all the same types of wood, just I sanded the first down to bare wood to see what it was like. Its got a reddish hue to it when varnished and the end grain is very close (slow growing?). Cheers Kev

Hi Dave The oil brings out the grain marvellously. I was a bit wary when I used it on a recent ash project but the oil/wax combo looks great. banjo

I normally buy skirting/architrave from local Travis Perkins. 4" Oak runs at roughly £4 per metre and they will profile for you.

I agree with Lugo, replace the bottom one and try to find a mid newel connector for the top. I recently fitted a beech Fusion staircase and it works a treat on the top newel. http://www.stairpartsonline.co.uk/catlist.php?cat=357
