I'm making a breakfast bar from 40mm kitchen worktop. It will have a hinged extension. But I want it to hinge as the following pics show...

What I don't want is this...

Any ideas?

They won't work.
The issue is the fact the leaf needs to move forward to open up. Either that or the leaf is shorter / leaves a gap to allow it to open and not hit the top.

having looked at the drawing again you are right they wont work.

it is exactly what you dont want, but looks better than your sketch... the rule joint? it depends why you dont like the one above.

is that requirement not just a kitchen cupboard hinge?

Steve
No. While kitchen hinges do move the door forward as you open it. It is very slight, not the 40mm thickness of the worktop.

I think you're going to struggle with this one unless you chamfer the worktop. The problem I see is that the pivot point means the leaf will foul the underside of the main surface.

The only possible solution I can see is a twin operation hinge whereby you pull the leaf out first and then fold up. Or normal hinges mounted on a sliding rail.

I think this might do the job. I got a pair from the US to repair a table with two centre leaves which fold down face-to-face and have to seperate when lifted into position then the two end faces push together. Effectively it's a sliding hinge that becomes self-supporting. If I can find where I've put them  I'll post a pic.
Otherwise, here's a link

Sort of what I was trying to describe (ish) but I think those would be way too small, it mentions using #4 screws....

I've seen them in my searching but couldn't figure out what they do.

I came accross this...

They look like a take on the invisible link hinge.

SOSS hinges

They're a concealed hinge. They mortise into the inner edges of both the door and case and disappear when the door is closed.

soss hinges i think.

could you put a leg near it ?

the hinge could swing from leg instead of fixed top

or is it solid worktop?
you could make it a feature ,big wooden hinge with a pin thru it
