Hi Everyone, on the weekend I picked up a Hilka no4 smoothing plane, the thing looks well made and seems in good condition for its age ( I believe its from the 60'S but would like confirmation). Can anyone advise me on these planes, I've never heard of them before. I've started cleaning it with a view to use it alongside my Stanley's and Records.

Never heard of them before but it looks quite good. Give it a try. Still got wooden handles so the 60tes does look about right. Looks a whole lot better made than their latest offering.

It looks like a standard generic number 4. It looks like Hilka are still operating: https://hilka.co.uk/no-4-jack-plane-43909504.html

It should work fine. Check the bottom is reasonable flat, and give the blade a good sharpen and see how you get on.
It does work fine and that's before I sharpen it, It has a slight gap where the cap iron touches the blade and traps some shavings but that's an easy fix. Overall it is as good as my other planes. Only time will tell if the blade holds its edge, if not a replacement blade is a reasonable fix.

Probably an Indian made sobo plane.

Ok but a bit iffy on QC ime.

Great for a scrub plane though..
