    up the chute

the other day at work I had an amusing thing happen, and basicly I was wondering if others had had similar basically, I was converting some timber for my current job. I was at the thicknessing stage, I put my cutting list and tape measure on top of the thicknesser and started setting it up. I...

    A Terrible Waste

in the colleges defence, it is a new build that they are moving stuff too. So the staff essentially got free reign to replace everything. And I guess older benches may look out of place in a new building. Not that I have seen the new benches or anything though. they are throwing out all the...

Anyone want a chess box/board plan free of charge?

i wouls also love to give this a go if you're ok with sharing the plans. May be a while before I gain the wood for it, and I am not great at draws so may take some time to make lol, but I really like the idea of it :)

    A few more boxes

just curious, how do you do the top of the 5th box? The hollow bead type thing on the top. I may not be explaining this well, it's tricky without being able to point at it lol, damn limitations of written language

    45 degree ripping cut

ok, lots of genius suggestions here. Will try a few out on some test pieces and go from there :) or ask very very nicely at work and see if they'll put them through the spindle molder or dim saw for me... but as I've not been there long yet not sure if they will go for that :P clamping...

    45 degree ripping cut

Oh, ok I was being thick photos can be done by phone. Below is what we are trying to achieve but with a less gappy joint than what we rrently have. As a back up I'm thinking of just rebating a piece of swuare section, but if we can figure out how to do it this way that would be better - as if...

    45 degree ripping cut

Hi, wanting a little advise on a project. Basically we are building a table currently, and for the legs we wanted to have 2 strips sort of mitered together - this is tricky to describe without pictures but hopefully you understand, if not I'll add photos in a reply from laptop later as not sure...

    bandsaw box blade advise

i am wanting to try to make a few bandsaw boxes. However, when having a go at the weekend the bandsaw was struggling with the curves as our blade is a bit too wide, I am looking at getting a thinner blade but was ondering what size/TPI would be best (i.e. what would others recommend)?

    trigonometry for saw horses

I had to make a sawhorse at college and did it basically the same way that ROB and roughcut have described, complete with V cut in the end :P and also a peice of thick dowel sticing out vertically at one end to help hold stuff still for things like planing. Except mine have another bracing peice...

Aldi woodworking tools back : router/etc

we got the router table last time it was up, it seems fairly good. Had to be altered to fit our router but no issues other than that. The belt clamp we got last time is ok too, unfortunately it's broken at the moment but not in a major way, just the belt/fabric part has come loose and i haven#t...

Is there a secret to punching masonry nails?

might be worth removing the plaster upto just below the skirting line if it's very poor or old, then attack blocks or battens to the wall to pack it out. I wouldn't replace the plaster as that can cause damp and ventilation issues. also... may be a stupid question, but are you using the right...

Monty Don's craft show (woodworking) SPOILER

I have been wondering this too... but thought I was just being thick lol at college we are taught to cut the wood slightly longer than needed and then plane, etc. as you describe. Not sure if that's just due to space limitations in a workshop of 20 students, but it's what we are taught...

Monty Don's craft show (woodworking) SPOILER

personally I didn't think the show was as bad as some of you are making out... yes the contestants work was not amazing, but it wasn't meant to be amazing, they are meant to be amateurs afterall. It's possible that they struggled with the machinery as how many people have access to these items...

Monty Don's craft show (woodworking) SPOILER

lol, I guess. Still seems odd to me though as in my view nothing beets hands on experience, and being able to work with people who are considered "masters" in their field has got to be a beneficial thing in the long run. Both for your own skills and as something to add to your CV (or just to...
