It did seem to be a nice life, hard but enjoyable, out in the countryside no one to boss you about.

It's all about working with nature and not against it. You also have to understand what you are trying to achieve in the safest way possible. No mobiles in those days. A brain is the best tool you will ever have, providing you use it.
 
I know a man who sawed boat planking by hand in his youth. He worked the lower end of the pit saw with his dad the boatbuilder at the top end. That must have been in the late 1940-ies or 1950-ies. Thanks heaven for the powered sawmills....................
