I went to an auction house yesterday and there was a box of woodworking tools including 2 wooden planes. 1 was about the length of a No 6 and the other was more the size of a block plane. Now, having seen in this very forum, the virtues of wooden planes being extolled, i decided to put in a bid .The chap sitting next to me was the only other bidder and he seemed determined to outbid me so i stopped at £20.I began to wonder if i had just allowed the bargain of the century to get away and so i checked out some prices on Flea Bay where it appears that they sell for a couple of quid.
I know next to nothing about these beasts but they seemed to be in reasonable condition,no chunks missing,no warping, blade present.
So, my question to the panel is this : what sort of money would you expect to pay for a useable woodie and what does one look for to determine if it is a good one or just a log ?

Thanks,

Piggy

BFP - I've seen jack plane woodies going for about £8 in Penny Farthing Tools in town but the one in particular was in excellent condition. I would expect to pay no more than £5 absolute tops for something at a boot fair and probably much less. Provided that the plane looks reasonable, has a decent iron and isn't too beaten up, they make a quite a good restoration project. True up the sole with a long steel plane, re-mouth if needed, a general spruce up to clear away most of the accumulated crud and you'll find that there's lots of use left in them...I certainly wouldn't be without my woodie in the 'shop - Rob

Price for a working bench plane; 5 - 10 quid

What to look for:

wood that looks OK (no worm, big dents, holes, rot...), but (most important) get the blade out, and make sure the BACK (flat side, with the logo) is reasonably rust free.

I agree with BB

I would not pass up a rubbish longish one for a fiver either
There is a nice bit of wood (I've turned chisel handles from one) and a lovely bit of steel.

I have a 2ft long jointer, once fettled and adjusted (not difficult to learn) they are great. Plenty of weight and a nice thick iron.

I've also turned a 18 incher into a scrub plane.

Thanks chaps.I`m glad i bailed out of the bidding when i did . I`m looking to get myself a No 6 in the not too distant future but will look into woodies a bit more in the meantime.

Nothing too exciting as it happens. there was a set of old rusty kitchen scales, a couple of old tape measures and a piece of rusty metal !! ???
Or maybe it was a lump. I can`t recall from my English Language `o`level days what the difference between the two is exactly. So basically just tat. The chap who (thankfully) outbid me seemed to be buying a lot of old tat, so he was either A) a genius at bargain spotting cunningly disguised as a scruffy alcoholic in a bit of a daze or B) a scruffy alcoholic in a bit of a daze.(without the encumberance of genius). Either way, i am grateful for his determination.
In the end i bought an old pine chest for restoration.
If it works i will post a piccy. [-o<
If not, i wont mention it again.

There is some deluded fool on fleabay with a "collection" of woodys. they want £99 for it
I reckon they are worth about 9 quid

Mind you; there is also a " very old Stanley plane" - I must go and get my eyes tested sharpish, cos it looks just like a Surform to me

Piggy,

I just noticed you are not far from me (am in Loughborough). If you want it there is a woody jointer sitting in my loft you can have if you collect it.

PM if you are interested.

Hi folks,
I have a beech jack plane, sans blade, if anyone has a blade looking for a home!
Pay the postage and enough for a pint (around £2.70 here) and it's yours!
Regards

John :)

I have a "James Howarth" blade looking for a plane. It is a little over 2" wide as I remember, I will check in the morning. If the blade will fit I would be glad of the plane. I have been meaning to get, or make, something similar for some while to use on a shooting board.

How far are you away from me? Maybe I could pop over sometime, save posting it.

If one desires a skewed blade, you want to start with a wide blade, since skewing reduces the (effective) width.

Might have been better to post it rather than throw it.

That's true Steve, but it was a Greenslade model from Bristol, so it has wings - Just like the Brabazon..
