Anyone got any ideas on what this wood might be...

Might be cherry looking at the bits of bark I can see underneath the fungi, but not certain.

Thanks. Cherry it is then...or plum... I've not turned plum before but this does cut like cherry which I have turned before. 4 rough turned bowls...

The bark definitely doesn't look like cherry and the wood itself definitely looks like plum/greengage.

From the bark I'd say this definitely isn't cherry (too many lenticels), although it is a prunus species.
The pink tinge in the one with fungus bark looks like some damson I've turned.

Everyone might be partially right, looks like cherry plum to me or gean (wild cherry)

I would confirm it's wild cherry. Harvested some just last week from a neighbour and it's identical to that in every way.

The wife of the man who gave it to me, along with another length of a different wood, tells me that he gave me hornbeam and rowan...so I'm guessing this is the rowan?

It's definitely neither Hornbeam or Rowan Stewart, all the replies identifying it as a prunus species are correct, with Cherry being the most likely candidate. Whoever gave it to you and identified the tree as Hornbeam (fissured grey bark ) or Rowan (smooth grey bark) made an error.

Thanks, Kim - when asked, if I make anything worth selling, I'll say prunus/cherry!

It's cherry, here's one growing near me. The bark and timber are unmistakeable.
