I have one of these http://www.machine-dro.co.uk/wixey-digi ... -base.html which takes 2 CR3032 batteries. Unfortunately I have lost the battery cover, and the batteries are fat.

Before I buy new batteries, is the cover vital for its function- completing a circuit etc or just to hold them in place? I could bodge it with a piece of tape if it only cosmetic, but I have no way of testing it without new batteries.

Could anybody slip the cover off theirs and try to turn it on?

I can get a replacement cover in the USA for $7 but it is hardly worth it when there would be shipping on top of that.

The cover is not part of the electrical circuit per se, but it does provide pressure so that the battery makes proper contact with the, er, contacts. Provided that you can maintain that good contact, you should be OK.
