Not sure if this is in the right section. Apologies if not.

I'm Fixing up a Sedgwick Spindle Moulder (SM4) and the spindle speed 'cassette' (I think that's what it's called - pic's below) is quite damaged. How I have no idea. I don't fancy running it in this condition, so I'm on the hunt for a replacement.

Can anyone recommend where I could pick one up?

I'm holding off calling Sedgewick... as I know they'll want M£GA BUCK$.

Cheers,

Jim

My lathe pulley is the same stepped type and has just as much damage as yours. I merely smoothed off the edges of the damage and its been going for years with no belt wear. Don't know if a spindle moulder puts more stress on the belt than a lathe, but I doubt it.

Looks like the standard stepped cluster that was used on the Coronet Major. If you can give me the sizes, (Imperial) I'll check the spare I have in my shop. It has a woodruff-keyway in the bore. If it's any use to you, some beer tokens plus postage will suffice.

Thanks for the leads chaps, very useful. I've left a message with one and will try the Bearing Boys on Monday. Spoke to a nice chap at Sedgwick but can't understand the £145 + VAT when similar sets are £30–50 + VAT

Hi Ian thanks for you comment, here are the (approx) step sizes (mm) 61, 70, 88, 112 on a 28 bore. The bore has a keyway notch.

It could be possible to run the the machine on the 2 middle pulleys, but there's a hair line crack on the top one and so many dents that it makes me feel it could shatter at any point. It's amazing what abuse some folk'll do... It's a machined piece of engineering... why smack it?! (hammer) #-o

I'd also like to change the electronic switch at some point to one similar to the SM4ii with braking and electronic spindle lock, going to give Brook Crompton a call on monday, but if anyone has any experience in this area it would be great to have an opinion.

Thanks again,

Jim

Jim:

Looks like the same...
Tomorrow I'll photograph what I have, and give you some measurements. Had a busy day today s0 I hope that's OK.

Cheers :)

Hi BenchWayze,

Many thanks for looking into this, I'm in no rush, we still have to run the 3 ph power and extraction ducting.

If useful I have attached some more snaps for identification purposes. The plan view is from the smallest pulley showing the keyway (you can see the fractures from abuse! (hammer) ). The side elevation illustrates a fixed collar piece (as opposed to planted).

Cheers Jim
