I applied the first coat of varnish to a sign I carved yesterday and it's still very tacky 17 hours after it went on. I shook and stirred the tin and didn't apply it to thick. It's a new tin of a good make-Ronseal yacht varnish.

It's so annoying. Can anyone advise what's wrong?

You have to give it enough time to cure, the ambient temperature when applying and drying should be in line with the manufacturers guidlines .

I once had a tin of sadolin clearcoat that didnt go off...... in the middle of the summer! 3 days in high heat and the customers front doors and frame were still wet. I phoned sadolin tech and the batch code showed the tin was 4/5 years old, it had been in howdens central stores for years before being distributed. I ended up having to wipe it all down with white spirit, leave it a couple more days and still had to scrape it back.
