Unusual growth on Blackthorn

Well I've not seen anything quite like it anyway.

Found this in a hedge yesterday, sorry they aren't very good pictures. The growth looks like it has developed around the branch rather than it being an enlarged part of the branch itself. It seems to have ordinary bark and be solid wood.

I don't know whether to try and turn it as is or cut in in half first. Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies. Trouble is its not very uniform in its roundness and seems to be folded around the stem, a bit like wrapping a thick pizza base around the stem. If I cut it he wrong way it might fall into pieces, it's pictured on an A4 paper so it's not very big either :(
