I spotted this today and thought what a brilliant idea for anyone who needs a turned piece spindles only, but does not have a lathe. It is doable by anyone with a little care.

Hi

Most things are possible, however, in this case, probably not practical.

The tool rest has no support at the upper end and the bearings of a drill press are not designed to take radial loads.

If you've never turned 'conventionally' you will have no 'muscle memory' to overcome which will be a benefit.

If you have to go this route, anchor the tool rest to the column and go very easily.

I wouldn't recommend it - perhaps a router lathe type system would suit your requirements

Regards Mick

As said above, if you have a router, you'll want to make one of these. I've only made drum shells with it, but I'm sure it can be adapted for smaller diameter turnings.

I think the bearings that are used in the spindle are the same type and in the wheels of my motorbike, so the loading isn't a problem.
The main problem is it looks so difficult to do!
