If these is interest we can run a topic of the week thread.

Put your suggestions below in this thread and I’ll pull one out of the virtual hat each week and away we go!

EDITED TO KEEP RUNNING LIST / (TOPICS ALREADY COVERED DELETED) - PLEASE ADD POSTS BELOW AND I’LL COLLATE HERE

  • What finishes do you use?
Ornamental turning + Rose engines themselves
Eccentric turning techniques & kit (incl chucks)
Hybrid turning with wood and resin.
Consistency when making sets (like goblets, plates, treen etc)
    Texturing and finishes
Piercing tooling and most effective cutters
Simple base treatments to remove obvious holding methods, associated forward planning
.

seems like a good idea.

How many chisels do you regularly use?

I thought for a moment you meant you wanted to talk about hats ! Wooden hats are just possible, I've seen one woven from ash splints - anyone here tried ash splint basketry, I wonder ?

Hat making could be a topic but wasn’t quite what I’d of predicted would come up!

I saw a turner who turns hats at Harrogate, very clever. for me i'd like tohave the following discussed:

1: consistency when making sets (like goblets, plates, treen etc)
2: ornamental turning would be good especially things like eccentric chucks
3: Rose engines themselves
4: texturing and finishes

+1 for ornamental turning. I don’t understand a good bit of it. Just when I think I understand Rose engine work, something happens to make me really understand that actually I don’t understand what is going on.

+1 - in the context of discussion about making utility ware (for the kitchen/ dining etc); economical (time) ways of turning larger numbers of items; finishes and quality of finish; best woods to use; decoration - is it worth the effort if it's just for use? That kind of thing.

1. Simple ways to construct deep hollow forms that don't require specialist or expensive hollowing tools.

2. Sanding and finishing internals of deep forms

3. Sanding and finishing internals of small diameter hollow forms (with entry lips)

4. Piercing tooling and most effective cutters

5. Simple base treatments to remove obvious holding methods, associated forward planning.
