Just thought I'd share this with you as swmbo isn't as impressed as she damn well should be !!

Did a favour for someone recently and when he asked how much I wanted for said favour, I told him nothing, its a favour but then jokingly mentioned that I was after some timber to play with

He said, come over, I should be able to help you, so I went over today :)
Got some scraps of Oak and Beech (shortest is 2ft)

Plus, 2 6ft lengths of Sycamore, 10" & 11" wide, 3" thick and a gnarly piece of 2" thick Beech
IMAG0587(2).jpg

IMAG0585(2).jpg

I've seen pictures of finished Sycamore so am well chuffed, but it seemed harder to cut by hand (I've taken a foot off each to have my first play) than the Beech - and that's taking into account the additional thickness

Anybody tell me what its like to work ? - I'll be doing most stuff by hand, though I don't yet know what that is

I have used both and worked by hand (how old fashioned). I like both and the Beech can come up a treat when oiled or finished. The Sycamore can be a bit plain. In Scotland it is called plain wood ....never sure whither it was plain (for looks) or plane (same relation). Best wishes.

Cheers for that twothumbs though I'm a bit disappointed in your description of the Sycamore, especially as I may be able to get some more

Is it any harder than Beech (thinking benchtop perhaps :))

=D> nice haul there my old mate now you got to get on and make something nice like a gun rack for me please
see you in the workshop soon mate

Sycamore is a lot softer than Beech. But having said that you've got to remember that there's huge variation within a species, for example the softest hard Maple will be softer than the hardest soft Maple!

I like Sycamore, and it's becoming a lot more fashionable, plus you can find pieces that are quite heavily figured. Take a look at this for example,

Not too shabby!
