Whilst sorting out my planes I remembered that I found the handle of my Stanley 50 rather small for my hand, and most of the cutters have turned up missing.
So I got to wondering if the scorpion tailed Record 050c would be more comfortable, or are they at the wrong end of Record production to match the Stanley in quality

How many satisfied 050C users are there out there? Or any recommendations for the slightly larger handed.

I bought the Record back in the late 60's and never really got on with it (my father had the Stanley) - I've since got a Record 405 which is a much better plane.

Readily available on the Bay.

I had a Stanley #50 but always found it too light-weight, so I sold it. Much prefer the Record #405/Stanley #45.

Cheers

My first plough plane was a Record 044c - bought new in the 1980s - which was the plough-only version of the 050c. The handle works, but it was slippery and I never liked it much. I did have a go at making a wooden replacement, which I deliberately made thicker - I have 'ordinary large' hands and it was a better fit. It is possibly a little bit too thick, but not so as to make me change it.

It wasn't hard to do - just a bit of sawing,

shaving and rasping:

It's an improvement of sorts, but the 405 is a better plane, and for some jobs I prefer the old Record 050. I don't have a Stanley 50 - I get the impression that they must have sold quite well to diy-ers in the 1950s but I suspect a lot of them saw very little use, judging by the frequency with which they turn up on ebay.

Other plough planes are available!

Thanks all, perhaps I will look out for a 405.
Its not high on the priority list, but always fun to look out for one, and I am well down the slope now, so what the heck.
