Anyone know what size screw I need for a Stanley 151. Bought mine of ebay a while back and it's got a bodged screw, which doesn't quite fit right. So I was wondering what size screw I need to replace it. Any one know?

I'm afraid I'm not used to imperial, so what does 12-24 mean? Is there a metric equivalent?

Google is your friend.

"The term 12-24 comes from Unified and American Screw Threads for Bolts, Nuts, and Machine Screws standards published by ANSI B1.1-1974. The number “12” is simply a size designator with no numerical meaning. The number “24” refers to 24 threads per inch."

I don't suppose you have a Stanley 78 rebate plane? They use the same thread screw - two actually.

Roger - Nope, I don't have one of them I'm afraid. It's looking like the easiest route will be just to buy another second hand one.

How old is your spokeshave and which screw is missing?

I happen to have a Stanley 151, made in England, probably in the 70s. The screw which holds the lever cap down is 24 tpi and about 0.207" diameter so could be 12-24.
The knurled head screw which pushes the lever cap away from the blade is smaller, 28 tpi and 0.180 diameter.

I reckon that your best bet is to drill and tap to take the next available metric size, M5 or M6. At least you will know what it is!

To add further confusion I also have old and new Record equivalents and their screws are not the same as the Stanley ( standard 3/16" Whitworth, 24tpi on the lever cap knurled screws and 28tpi 7/32" BSF on the slotted retaining screw.)

Oh the joys of standardisation and metrification - ho hum :roll:

If it's a 12-24 the same as frog screws I have some cheese head ones and you are welcome to one.

It will most likely serve no value to your needs Morfa, but I do have a 12-24 tap & die.

Stewie;

Me too.

Andy - I've no idea how old. It does also say made in England on it as well. I'm missing the Lever Cap (frog?) screw, not the one that you use to bend the blade.

Pete - If you do have a spare that'd be lovely. PM sent.

On the tap and die front would this kit do the job:

It has a 12NC24 coarse thread. I'm tempted to buy one as it'll probably come in handy. Is £30 too cheap? I'm unlikely to use it loads, but don't want to shell out on one that will be useless.
