I have been considering a No3 or No4 smoothing plane to add to the jack and block plane but I already own a random orbit sander so wondering if the actual results from a smoothing plane are better than the sander can provide thus justifying the spend.

The jack plane already has an additional iron so i can use it as a undersized jointer as i learn to use a hand plane so the alternative compromise is another additional iron for the jack and hone it so it can be used as an oversized smoother as suggested by Mr Schwarz

its probably worth pointing out the only things i will be making out of hardwood at the moment will be boxes - the furniture is all ply or mdf
