I have an infil shoulder ..nothing special
it has a makers mark i cant quite work out
8" long 1" wide 2.5" high
marples iron

starts with W ends with Man but the 4 or 5 letters in between are not decipherable

any ideas?

BPM III lists:

Reuben Waxman London 1910-1930
Samuel Westerman, Leeds 1817

Could it be either of them?

anyway of making it clearer through cleaning
or will i rub it away ?
needs honing but would like to identify first
extremely fine mouth
about 1-2 mm

Where is the "makers mark" as this will aid in identifying if it's the maker or owners, how would you say "type of font"
Is it? Capitals ect,
Maby a photo would help

That's a very nice plane I have to say. Is the iron snaked looks like a 1?
A maker usually stamped their name in the best location on a plane (toe or heel) so that is in my opinion 100% owners name. Also they stamped into the wood infill part as to engraved, lever cap on the other hand do have engraved makers marks.
When dating these plane I'm a little rusty,
Are there any numbers stamped in the slot where the wedge goes?

Hope this helps.
Thanks

The first thing to try is not to touch the plane but to adjust your photographic lighting set-up. There's an excellent thread with some techniques that work well here: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/tiny-success-t72861.html.

Of course it is pretty likely to be an owner's mark and therefore somebody unknown, but you could have a go.

ok cant find a makers mark
wet n dry and put to use :D

anyone know how to dismantle if i decide to replace the infill?

I'm not sure that's a good idea as they are either filed screws or rivets, someone will say for sure but these tools are best left alone, now a smoother or panel plane with a bad infill now that's fine to replace as it's what you hold onto.
I would just wipe down with RW as use as it once was.

If you determined to replace the infill start a new thread to get the best info on the next few steps needed and ***** the pros and cons.

Good luck
