A telephone call was received this afternoon from Ripoff and Cheetham Solicitors saying something like "I understand that you have been involved in an accident."

The recipient was my 90 year old mother and, being old and hard of hearing, didn't fully understand what was happening but heard the word "accident".

She spent the next hour or so frantically calling members of the family to find out who had had an accident.

I know it's the season of goodwill but I hope they get what they deserve.

I get fed up with cold callers as well, but the people doing the calling are not the scum, they just do a ****** job for a living.
Scum people are child molesters, police killers etc

I think to call low ranking workers "scum" is out of order, the management / owners who let this type of marketing and calls to old people or confused people are the real problem.

The callers just sit at terminals, which auto dial up. They work from a script, they are brain dead (through boredom) and call hundreds per day, day after day.

I see your point, whiskeywills elderly mother was caused a certain amount of distress, this cold call was not trying to sell a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or double glazing, this was from a company who cash in on some unfortunate person who's had an accident, I have to admit if it were my 98 MIL who recieved a call like this I too would feel exactly as the OP fells.

Several years ago I had the misfortune to have a minibus reverse into me, it caused a small amount of damage to my front bumper, I was in the car at the time and stationary, about a year or two after this I recieved a call not unlike the call whiskeywill has mentioned, the caller said there was £1500 in an account waiting for me to claim, all I had to do was say I had a couple of sleepless nights after the accident and that money would be mine, I told the caller what I thought of her, I asked for the name of the company she worked for but she hung up, your probably going to disagree with me but at the time of the phone call that person was 'the company' so I would treat that person in the same way as the MD of that company, in my eyes their low life's, it's because of companies like this that insurance premiums are as high as they are.

I agree these callers can be a pest. We use a Call blocker that plugs in series with your incoming line (and it is brilliant) I got fed up with repeat calls from the same numbers every evening. they even started using numbers starting with 00, I think that is to stop you blocking them. Of course we got them during the day as well, but the evening ones where the most annoying the, blocker that we use, gives you the option to block almost All of them, when I get a call now I just press the button on the box while I am talking and that's it. You also have the option to lock group numbers ,programming numbers in or out and blocking VOIP (unavailable call numbers) plus lots more. Cost me about £50 on the net.Now we have virtually none. I do feel sorry for OP's mum, hope she has not been put of answering the phone.

David, as far as I know it is not possible with any incoming 'number unavailable' calls to discriminate between VOIP or normal POTS and so blocking those calls, at least for me, would be a no-no as sometimes I have incoming calls (hospital, for example) that need answering.

The blocker seems to do an awful lot more than I have mentioned. As I am a bit weary of naming products on here I will pm you what we are using and you can see all the stuff it does and see if it would work for you.
I have no association with this company, but I have been using it for about 3/4 months. For me it has been the best thing I have bought for a while, maybe not for everybody.

Thanks David. It does indeed look very promising and does differentiate between IP based calls and POTS.. I am now intrigued...time to do a bit of research!

How do these call blockers work with the automated hospital reminder calls? Our local hospital is now using these calls as a way of combatting No Shows at appointments.
My concern would be that if the machine blocked these calls (due to having no caller id), there could be a risk of getting appointments cancelled.

When those people call in Finland they usually speak Finnish and if they by chance speak Swedish they usually speak a kind of big city language. When I get one of those calls I don't understand nor speak a word of any other language than the very oldfashioned form of Swedish we speak around here. We still use a lot of old words and old grammar that makes it very difficult for outsiders to understand.
I just tell them to speak the language of the customer or shut up and go to hell. They seem to understand those words.

I think people are too polite. If all we were rude enough nobody could stand up to the job of being a phole salesman. Then we would get rid of them.

I have noticed in nature that the scum tends to float to the top.
