Rough Cut

I've been asked to make some Bat Boxes and the plans say they should be made from sawn timber, not planed. The reason is to help the Bats grip on the wood. I don't have any sawn softwood but I do have some planed 6" x 2" I could convert on the Bandsaw. Which type of blade would give the roughest cut?! I don't mind buying a new blade from Ian and can go up to 5/8" or maybe 3/4" on my BS300E.

I would rough it up using a rasp, if the cut surface wasnt that rough from the saw. I wouldnt buy a blade that deliberately leaves a rough cut, unless you have a lot to do.

How about a good roughing up with a wire brush ? Giving it a good hard scrubbing with the grain should get it fairly rough.

Whilst i dont disagree with the sentiment, having a blade that isnt much use for anything else was my fear, whereas a couple of new hand stitched rasps from Dictum would see numerous applications.

I suppose you could use an older blade and bend a few teeth over to get more texture. But it wouldn't be much good after that.

I wanted a couple of new blades for my BS300E so I've ordered a 5/8" 3 TPI with extra set for green wood etc. I'll need this later in the year when we take out a small tree in the garden. The site says it leaves a rough cut so it should also be ideal for this project.

Send your wood to me and I'll saw it by hand .... it doesn't come any rougher than that #-o

Yes as above i read some where when i built a bird house the the chicks need to grip the inside to climb out so i just made a few rough saw marks on the inside

Please excuse me for saying, but some good clean pallet wood would be just the right texture, just as long as you can get the size needed and not looking ex pallet and cheap skate.

Pallets would indeed be good for this and they used to have lots at work... I retired about 18 months ago though!

I made some boxes a few years ago from some planed Cedar left overs, I cut horizontal saw kerfs in the wall plate, haven't got plans, will try and find a picture.

Had bats in them ever since I put them up, keeps them out of the Barn.

Pallets would indeed be good for this and they used to have lots at work... I retired about 18 months ago though!

A half inch 3tpi would be plenty big enough for your bandsaw and a good investment, five eighths would be overkill, what's the point of a bandsaw without blades??? those courser blades will always come in handy when you need to rip larger sections.
