Record Vices

here's a quesion I've never really considered before, what do the numbers on Record vices stand for?
I have a Record 84 vice with 4½" wide jaws so can't see if the number applies to the size?

I've got an old Record 3VS which has 4" jaws. The three stands for 3 Ton I think?!
