After a very large hiatus I received an email from someone who'd built an interpretation of my semi-famous bowsaw plan!!

Given that my page now only exists in the wayback machine, this is particularly surprising.

I really must get it rehosted.

The traditional bowsaw is a magical thing. Almost entirely made from wood, with only the minimum quantity of metal involved. The essence of the design is a mortise and tenoned 'H' shape, but on this simple canvas, the scope for elegant shaping, moulding and discreet chamfering seem unlimited (except by your own good taste and judgement ;-)

I'll check it later!

Have you pictures of the one he made?

Jim

There's a whole gallery on the page.

That makes me want to make one ...... won't look as good as those though :(

I've only skimmed the words but what are the best woods to use to build these saws?

Almost anything springy and tough; the loads aren't huge. The commonest by far in the UK is beech.

Yew would be lovely, and a good pun (BOW saw, geddit)
