Have an old, mostly redundant, planer thicknesser. Thinking it might convert to a sander/grinder by wrapping the existing drum or sleeving it to accept the abrasive paper.
If anyone has done this. I would be interested to know if there are any pitfalls.
Could make a very useful piece of kit and earn it`s floorspace!
 
I would suggest that the RPM of the PT is too high. I think most sanding drum are somewhere around 1000rpm and the thicknesser around 2500+ rpm. You will have to slow down the motor or use pulley wheels to get the drum to slow down.
 
~350 - 400 m/min is what you should be going for. Use your drum's diameter and its rpms to calculate linear speed.
As Kinsella says, you'll probably have to reduce the drum rpms.
