One of the things I've rapidly learnt on here, despite coming with an "I know nothing, and have much to learn" approach, is that there are always new ways of doing things that I've never even considered.

I'm putting up some battening (2x1) for shelving, and will be wrapping this within a small cupboard with plasterboard sides, to form a U shaped batten support. What tricks do you use to ensure perfect alignment of the battens all the way around? I typically put up the middle/rear support, and then use the spirit level as both a level and an alignment face for each of the side supports in turn, keeping the end of the level resting on the rear batten, whilst holding the side support tight against it, and the whole thing is of course level. Couple of pilot holes, then relax and ditch the spirit level to finish putting it up.

Any other ideas?

Can't say I can think of a more effective way tbh. It always involves setting up one side of the "U" and going from there.

I cut some vertical battens to space the horizontal ones correctly, allowing for an uneven floor / ceiling (whichever is closer) if necessary. That way I'm sure the horizontal battens are screwed in without moving at all

Yup, going to do that for the repeat shelves, it's just getting the first up. I often use a piece of mdf to give a longer contact surface on the spacer to avoid tilt.
