This is the first piece of Oak i have turned in a few years,i think it came from some waney edge boards i bought when i first started turning so was bone dry and rock hard.
It was tearing out when i first started on it so the gouge was kept sharp and light cuts taken when i was getting down to the finish cuts and managed to get a decent finish.
This is 250mm x 25mm finished with Hardwax oil.
No side image as there isn't much to see just a slight curve.

Who dropped the pebble in the pool? Certainly captured a selection of features in that piece.

Looking at this a second time.... the lower half of the plate looks for all the world like a fossil of a fish. :) Very eye-catching.

Really rather beautiful, and superbly done. Love the shape and the figuring, both.

I too would be interested in seeing how the base is done, and how it was mounted.

Nic.

Thanks for the replies folks i missed them,so here is a piccy of the base and how i finished it.
I had a small tenon which was turned off when reversed and a slight concave was cut in so it sits flat, you can just see the circle tat teh plate rests on.
It was held with my home made vaccum chuck which was made for me by a forum member a few years ago.
