Was asked to build a unit that could be used as a gym but with storage at one end like a shed bit

The structure is 20ft x 8ft.

The floor is built using 6x2 tanalised with noggins at 2ft centres. It is built on a rough concrete slab which varies in height. Each joint is levelled using slate to keep the joists off the concrete and to allow air flow beneath the floor. The floor is 18mm wbp ply gripfixed and nailed with 51mm galvanized ring shank nails, the gripfix will prevent squeaking and movement.

The walls are fabricated using 3x2 cls clad on the outside with 12mm wbp ply again fixed with 51mm galvanized ring shank nails. The spacing is 2ft to allow joining of the ply.

The roof is constructed with 4x2 tanalised joists with a 6x2 roof beam. Noggins are again 2ft centres for 12mm wbp fixed to the outside. Pitch angle of roof 32deg.

Storage end door 12mm ply inserted into door for fixing 20mm shiplap (actual size 15mm) to match the outside. Picture shows half complete for information.

First fix electrics and then internal cladding to go. Will keep you updated if required.

Les

Very nice, excellent photos, and an excellent construction job - and yes, would like to see the electrics going in and the job completed (please [-o< )

Andrew

Nice work Les, your stand for the GCM10S looks much nicer than mine.

I bet you managed to get that built in half a day too! ](*,) ;)

Would be very interested in seeing the electric going in as that is high on my list

WiZer

The Bosch stand is a nice bit of kit especially as I was able to negotiate it free with the saw :D :D :D

Half a day :( :( more like half a month of 10 hour days

The 8 ft wide was a constraint for the existing garden and fish pond.

Will try to show the electrics first phase with pictures.

Plus the internal cladding.

Les

Electrics first phase.

Decide where your supply is coming into the workshop to fit consumer unit.

Drill holes through all noggins uprights etc to enable cable to be run around workshop. Remember the 13amp supply needs to be a ring main i.e. start at the consumer unit and finish at the consumer unit.

If you are just putting in a couple of lights a single feed using double pole switches looped off to the next light should be ok. Otherwise a ring main will be needed.

Make packers to fit the back boxes to so that the faces of the sockets or switches will be flush with the cladding.

Feed cable and leave loops sticking out of back boxes to connect faces after cladding.

Will post further pictures as project progresses.

Excellent job,Les - and great pictures :D
If you are only having a 13 amp circuit, there is no reason why you can't wire it as a radial (start at CU,loop in and out of each socket in turn, and just end at the last socket) - you would only need to go to a ring final if you wanted to go to 32 amps.
And lights are never wired as a ring - either loop in/loop out through the roses,or via junction boxes.
These are just comments, and not criticism - still think the whole job is fantastic workmanship.

Andrew

very nice work Les, great to see the electrics going in.

I'd love to have a Koi pond, do you think one would fit between my workshop and the fence? (10cms)

Thanks for the comments.

Bit of a miss information, although I said a 13amp suppy, I did mean each socket. If the consumer unit is supplied by a 30amp breaker which if more than one socket at a time is used a ring main is essential. You know what I mean, without going into the realms of electricity as there are experts on this forum and I was just pointing out the basics trying not to get into trouble

WiZer they say carp grow to the size of the pond, you could have diddy carp in a diddy pond

No trouble from me,Les  - as I said,it really is an excellent job throughout.
Just wanted to throw a couple of options in,as there are several people building workshops on here, and all getting round to the "putting in electrics" stage;it does need some planning.
The two things I would say in relation to installing power in a workshop are :-
1)Use double sockets, don't bother with singles.
2)Plan how many sockets you think you need, then fit double the amount (in the same way the workshop itself might seem big to start with,it fills up all to quickly :( )

Andrew

Finally finished.

Plus the bonus of having a Part "P" certificate issued to home owner. It helps having a mate that is qualified to issue the certificate. No need to notify council as it is part of the issuing process of the certificate to notify the council with the necessary paperwork. :D :D :D :D

Les

proper job les!

Now that your finished, hop in your car and shoot round to mine and finish it for me! Oh and bring your leccy pal!! ;)

Les

Very impressive.

Where I live, it would be called a starter home and cost £250k!

Regards.

Les lets hope you can make a few more posts before Tony consigns it to the graveyard section - hale Byron & WizeR - but you are north of the Watford Gap - lets hope. I will get my wrists slapped again in the morning or worst.
Byron don't despair keep building that shed - you are a star - WiZer too.
