How not to build a box and how to embarrasss yourself on the internet.

Oh dear what have I done? not being somebody that finishes things very often this could be just as much as a challenge as building a reasonable box. So best go and find some wood and some ideas.....

Well then folks, back again. Had a stressfull few days with our oldest dog - hes been ill for a while now and thought he was a gonna last night :( . Got to the vets this morning and have some meds to try him on, if they dont improve his condition then its time to put him to sleep :( :( :(

So back to the box... been thinking about what I'd like to try and make (notice I said 'try'), not sure if I'm going to have a go at veneering or just make from solid - both appeal but I'll have to see whats in the 'wood storage area' before I decide.

Colour wise I want light/pale sides and dark well figured lid. Dont want much figure on the sides, if its too boring then maybe I can add some interest with some dark details. I'd like to do the main box corners with a compound mitre joint but I'm not sure if I'm up to it - might try a trial run with some scrap and see if I can do it. Another option I was thinking about was regular mitred corners but with the sides cut in a cove on the tablesaw, however whilst browsing round youtube I noticed Steve Ramsey has built the same box...

But in a slightly more dangerous way

So thats as far as I have got with any ideas. I'm sure everybody else is romping away with their box design and has them fully sketched up in 3d already...

Back for more drivel tommorrow after I've raided the wood pile, I'll post a pic of the 'workshop' as well

I'm sorry to hear about your dog, it's a stressful time when pets are ill.

Good luck with the box, I'm looking forward to the rest of this WIP.

Hmmmm can see him loseing his fingers/ hand or both sooner or later.

Hi
Best wishes for your dog. Not a nice time no matter how prepared you think you are.

Thanks for posting the video. Found it interesting but really made me cringe. I had to keep counting the guys fingers.
What made me laugh was the notice at the end suggesting that professional advice be taken. He should maybe think about that himself.

I concerns me that newbies to machinery might view that as the correct and safe way to operate a table saw

Bob

Thanks for all the well wishes, the mutts hanging in there - looks better today and seems comfortable. Not sure how long we can finance the meds for or even if they will work for any length of time BUT hes here now and thats all that matters.

I did say I'd add a picture of the workshop, and here it is with my bench...

Ok ok, no laughing at the back there! A slight upgrade is needed for this project I think. The long term plan is a conversion of my garage into a workshop but this has been hindered by a knackered roof and general lack of funds. I did manage to get a temporary cover on it before xmas and have been drying it out, so I should have a workable corner soon.
Bench upgrade is a two stage affair, I have been planning on building small bench so I can use it for now instead of the dreaded workmate (ugh!), this has been helped this week with some salvaged softwood :D - so the weekend brings a mini bench bodge up

As for the box... I've decided to try some veneering!, all the real wood stock I have is pretty boring (beech) or nasty (keruing) or just naff (pine). I have an idea for the lid but havent a clue if it will look any good so will just see what happens. Methinks maple for the box sides.

And now for a cup of tea.
