Looking at the original Tooltique photos at the start of the thread, in comparison to the picture of the re-profiled iron against the blue tape above, the profile has been significantly modified in the process, the original quirks were narrower and deeper, so I wouldn't read too much about the orginal use of the plane from the profile of the test piece. Quite a pleasing profile all the same.
