Today I made a start on my next commission. This time it is a cabinet to house an electronic keyboard. The keyboard will be removable and the whole thing will be in black.
I started with a beech frame for the keyboard to sit on.

Next I made the legs and a 6mm panel between them.

Then on to the foot after a bit of work on the bandsaw and sander.

then a quick dry fit to check the dimensions.

By the end of the day I had both sides ready.
:D

Love reading your threads Alan.

Do you prefer the individual jobs or do you like to get your teeth stuck into a bigger project?

I also like your WIP threads. Alan your work pace amazes me, I bet you could have nearly finished this in a day if you didn't have to keep stopping to take pictures.

Is beach the cheapest hardwood to use if your going to paint it?

Thanks guys, Glad you like the WIP's. I think you will find that Tulip wood (poplar) is actually a cheaper wood for painting but it is quite soft for a hardwood. I prefer Beech as it cuts so cleanly and I do like the grain in it. (I know many people don't think much of the grain pattern of Beech) Only drawback with it is there is a lot of tension released once it is cut and can bend a lot. Careful cutting and planing can minimise this though.

I got the legs and the shelf in primer today.

I also made a start on the sides. Next week I shall make the top and the back panel and then it will be time for a test fit.

Been busy with this over the last couple of days. I finally got the back panel fitted.

Now this did present a problem due to my own error! I had rebated the back panel to fit into grooves in the legs and the top so it was handed, I then cut out the hole for the foot pedal..........in the wrong place! As the unit was upside down on the bench I had measured off the position from the wrong side! :( Luckily I had intended to fit a plinth on the bottom to help stiffen up the back panel so replaced a piece and sandwiched it between the plinth sections.

Once this was repaired and sanded down I could then start work on the top.
With the top being so narrow and only supported at the ends I decided to reinforce it with hardwood. After routing out a slot I inlaid the 'splint' into the top.

I then cut a piece of 9mm MDF for the front and trimmed this to fit.

This will be trimmed to size after having a test fit of the keyboard.
While I was on with the top I decided to make the music sheet holder for the top. This was simply a piece of 9mm MDF with a detail routed into it and then sandwiched between two pieces of Beech. I put a chamfer on to each of the beech pieces to give the holder the angle it needed. Finally I put two dominoes into the bottom to locate it on the top.

My customer will bring the keyboard tomorrow so I can have a test fit and make the final alterations to the fit. :D

Nice design Alan, it follows the lines of double keyboard organs, can I pick your brains now, the slots you have routed into the organ 'shelf' are they for cooling or to reduce weight?

My sister-in-law got a keyboard for Christmas so I may be making something similar in the future.

Today I got the finish on the cabinet. Tomorrow I can fit the top and it will then be ready for delivery.

I ended up taking the moulding off the front of the music stand and adding two metal pins to hold the pages of the books.

I think the customer will be happy with it. :D

I delivered the cabinet tonight and got a shot of it with the keyboard fitted.

Customer was very happy with it and may want some furniture making in the near future. :D

Thanks Baldhead. The finish is 2K Morrells in a 30% sheen. The customer didn't want a high shine on it preferring just a sheen black.

Nice Alan, good wip.
Single garage workshop coming along...only thing is I 'very been hit with the festool bug!!!!
Aaaarrrggghhhh

Very attractive and should go well in a furnished room.

Alan I will be very pleased to post your thread at the Yamaha music forum.

Your commission was for an electric piano but no doubt you can also change the stand style to be suitable for a keyboard.
