I'm wondering does anyone know of a decent book/text book showing standard joinery details for windows, doors, stairs etc - basic builders joinery items.
My padwan is about to take a couple of months off touring the states and wants such a book to accompany him on his travels.

I've got a ragged pair of books by David Bates from the early '80's that I used on my apprenticeship but I'm loath to let them go (plus they are very out of date when it comes to info on current build regs etc).

I'd really like him to spend some time over such a text as although he's pretty good at executing the relevant joints and work, his planning skills need a boost and his understanding of the various joints and the appropriate use of them is in need of a bit of a boost. Two months away is a good time for him to brush up.

Any pointers gratefully received.

I've just finished reading “Modern Practical Joinery" by George Ellis on the kindle edition. Although it is a Victorian book it is all about the basics in a fantastic clear manner and then covers both hand and workshop machinery. It then goes on to discuss house and shop work for the joiner covering all the principles and designs for the different types of shop front and window systems needed and used by the different sales trades, including butcher, haberdasher, tailor and baker amongst other and the needs for different styles and types of shop-frontage and display systems.

Would be a great book for him to have.
