Hi there,

I have recently inherited an old planer thicknesser. Unfortunately I have almost no knowledge of woodwork so not only have no use for the machine but could do with some advice. The only information I've been able to find about a model is the fact is says "Imperial" on the side. It seems an awful shame to just throw it away so was wondering if anyone could tell me what its value might be - or indeed if anyone might be interested in buying it? I've seen that similar machines have gone for £500 to £2000 ish on ebay...

Thanks

Does it run and function ok? I may be interested, depending on the cutter width. I would imagine that Ian's values are more likely than yours though.

There's no need to get distracted into a long discussion of legislation about machinery safety, but as it is, that planer lacks a guard (you can see where it used to be fixed on) and possibly lacks any way to connect an extractor to suck up all the shavings it would make. So it would not sell to a commercial woodworking shop. You might be able to sell it to an amateur with a casual attitude to such matters or the time and ability to adapt it suitably.

Andy makes some valid points.

the blade guard isnt a huge issue- it should be possible to fabricate something. It may need belt guarding, which is more difficult. It certainly needs a clean up. If there is no plug on it, it potentially could need a motor, and so is worth probably a little more than scrap value. That said, it may form the basis of a machine for somebody wanting a standalone planer. Extraction is also a valid point.

My inquiry was based on this- I have a great little axi one, but could do with a wider cut. I prefer separates, and have a wider thicknesser. A refurb would have to be a winter job, and needs to fit the requirements when done. when you cost your time into these projects, you may as well go and buy something that is finished by others!

There was a dodd planer on here a while back- i cant find the thread. Somebody wanted rid- they had upgraded or it was in the way, something like that. The price started cheap at £250 and dropped and dropped and dropped until it was the same price as was offered for scrap- i dont know if it sold. I wished I had had that one, but it goes to show that standalone planers are often not attractive to buyers.

Hi,
Thanks for all the comments.
As has been pointed out, there is currently no plug attached and I'm afraid I haven't had chance to attach a new one yet to check the motor but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work (the previous owner died a few years ago and his wife seemed to be a fan of chopping unused cables - I know it was used a lot prior to that though). I'll try to get that sorted when I find some time.
The blade measures at 10" wide - hope that helps.
