Hello all, just registered on the site yesterday and wanted to see if there's anyone else in my neck of the woods.

I'm in Bradford (Bolton) having just bought a place with my missus which happily has a decent sized garage I need to get fitted out for woodworking.

The guy who owned the place before was making trikes out of cut up Beetles so seems right there should be some sort of building going on in there. First jobs are to get at least one wall fitted with OSB to make adding shelves and wotnot in the future that bit easier (and to give it that proper woodshop look!) Then I need to make a fold up / down workbench as I'm still going to use the garage for my car in the bad weather.

Any tips on where's best to pick up wood and supplies (esp. smaller amounts of quality woods for little projects) round here would be great. Desperately trying not to be a Homebase kinda guy.

I've previously used Woodlands in Horsforth and recently heard of a garden centre / woodshop called High Trees on Otley Road which I might have to check out. Noticed there are also a few timber merchants dotted around so hopefully I'm going to be OK for the big stuff.

See you around...

Jon.

Hi

I am in Kirkstall.

Forget High Trees and Woodlands, unless you want fencing/garden timber.

Not sure where you are exactly, but British Hardwoods is worth a look in Keighley. Arnold Laver has a good range, but can be expensive when I have enquired. I have not been but Dragon Timber in Pudsey seems to list a few items too.

When you work out what you are looking for, it is easier to Gove you better info about where to find it- the Harrogate show in November (I think) would be ideal to visit and buy whilst you are there.

Hi there, thanks for that. Saved me a trip... do need to make a box for outdoor planting at some stage though. Maybe they'll come in for there.

I'm basically just on the other side of Greengates, through Calverley. Still come over to Leeds all the time though, missus works in Horsforth and I still use the same barbers I did back when I lived in Headingley years ago. Not really explored Bradford much yet to be honest.

I'm just wondering where to find nice hardwoods to make small things such as mallets, etc. Watched a good YT vid the other day and figure it'd be a good way to up my skills.

I would go and have a rummage in the British hardwoods offset box. they sell it by the kg and there is usually bits of oak, walnut,, cherry, ash, maybe others. other places you will have to buy a full board which would be very expensive for mallets etc.
