Hi, I am sorting through my dads shed, and have come across a norris plane, I have been trying to find out exactly what type it is and how old it is so I can value it. I am thinking along the lines that it is a Pre War No 5 in Gunmetal finish. But could really do with some advice. My mum wants to sell his old tools and I don't want to get ripped off!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi. this is a gunmetal version of the Number 5, and was known as a number 17. It proberbly dates to around 1900. The plane is rare, and of some considerable value. I would offer you £500 now, and you would proberbly be a fool to take it! Just to add this looks to be a closed handled vesion which is most unusual. By the way the infill looks realy dark. is it Ebony? If it is then that makes it even rarer.

Thanks for the quick response, I did look at the pre war no 17 but the handle looked different... Its really hard for an untrained eye to identify these! As for the colour I am not sure, I will have to have a look at it again tomorrow. Thanks again, my mum will be pleased!
