How can I tell, just by looking at a hand saw online whether it cuts on the push or pull stroke? (assuming this information is not in the product spec)

origin- western saws cut on the push stroke. they should always say if they cut on the pull because it is different to the norm.

Except some western saws have the elongated teeth - they are sharp on the back of the teeth as well, and cut both ways. I was going to say "Japanese pattern" but I suspect true Japanese pattern cut only on the pull.
