I'm halfway through building a workbench and planning to attach the top with buttons so wondered if there's a best grain orientation to make the strongest buttons.

It's possible based on forces you plan to exert that buttons will not be strong enough. I never heard of anyone using that for a work bench. In any case you normally want grain running in direction of longest dimension.

Well its square so doesn't matter I guess. The reason I thought of buttons was the top is melamine coated chipboard and the carcass is PSE pine so I thought there might be movement as it's in the garage.
Maybe I need a rethink.

The carcase will have its stable long grain going across and along the top. Shrinkage will be in the thickness of each carcase member and will not affect the distance between fixing centres.

If you don't believe me, just drill the clearance screwholes one size larger.

Brilliant responses guys. I'm heading to screwfix tomorrow anyway so will get those plates.

Thanks all.
