And yes, metal breaks off at the bottom of an unsupported cut, but I've never seen the unsupported piece take a chunk out of the piece in the vice when it drops off as it does with wood.
It depends on the relative weights of the pieces being cut, simple maths even a centrifugal believing engineer can do that one eh Mudman :wink:

and as said by Roger its also the reason you cut oversize......isn't it

I have worked on a bench with a left mounted vice and it felt proper peculiar it did, I was glad to get back home. The work in the vice blocks off the access to the bench top, your knuckles are in immediate danger of being peeled............anyway its all been said before

Thanks Tony. Well, that sounds like proper metalwork. I'll file it away in the 'sounds interesting but unfeasible' drawer.
