Today while sharpening a blade in an old Stanley spoke shave I decided to true up the cap iron by making sure the rough cast side of the iron was flat along the edge where it supports the blade. After just a couple of strokes across some emery paper it cracked right down the middle #-o (I needed pliers to loosen off the wing nut securing the cap iron so it is possible that it had been overtightened and this had caused the fracture)perhaps I am more heavy handed than realised. Now to fix it ! I had thought a thick piece of brass cut to the same shape might do it, but perhaps I need a piece of steel. Or do I need to try and fix the original.

Suggestions welcome.

I can't be the first person this has happened to can I ?

Does it look like the ones they currently make? If so see about getting a new one from Stanley. If not I would go with steel.
