Fitted Furniture & Laminate Floor

Hi,

I'm building some fitted furniture into someones living room. Along one of the walls they want the appearance of two alcoves with cabinets and shelving in them. I'm putting what can only be described as a fake chimney breast in the middle, to create the alcove effect. There's some existing cabinets running along the entire width of the wall, and on inspection, inside the cabinets, the uprights for the frame work have had the laminate cut out at the base, so they're supported by the concrete directly.

My question is, was this done because laminate flooring is prone to moving around, and so would have destabalised the framework? I can't think of any other reason than this.

Some other possible reasons:

- The cabinets were built first so whoever fitted them had no option except to build them on the concrete and the laminate was laid as close as possible.

- Doing it this way saves the price of a couple of square metres of laminate.

- It lets the owner change their flooring without major disruption.

Another option to fit carpet in your living room on top on you laminate floor so it will create perfect look.
