Finished my first turning at home tonight. Previous efforts were 4 night classes ( before work interfered and all I made was a tool handle) and two failed bowls ( one I hollowed too deep and holed it and the other had reverse chucking issues )

It's my little girls 2nd birthday on Wednesday so I took a shot at a whistle for her. It's made from Beech and I only used my skew chisel and a bowl gouge for roughing.

It's not perfect but I'm happy to have finished something and at least it makes the right noise!

i wouldn't give that to a 2 year old.

my 1 month old can make enough noise without a whistle. I dread to think what it would be like with one. The dog would be sick of being taken on long walks every tea time and weekend.

nothing wrong with that Mike - top job, nicely turned. :D =D>
What finish did you put on it, bearing in mind your daughter will be putting it in her mouth ?
Make sure she is supervised with it tho, don't want her falling over with it in her mouth.

We all have drawers / cupboards / shed corners with 'failed' turnings (ask Neil Farrer about a trip to Gedney where he turned a bowl with a hole in it, in front of the rest of us there - 2 yrs ago & still has the P taken out of him lol).

Cracking job - onwards & upwards as they say.

Nice !

I make a few of these, but sand down the underside to shape, using a home made horizontal drum sander

( sandpaper glued to a spindle between centres ! )

It's finished with Chestnut Finishing Oil I had lying around. According to Chestnut it has passed EN71 for use on toys and isn't all oil safe once cured anyway?
