Thanks Brian, i've got some big ones for my bench drill, and i have some small ones that i use with my dremel, thanks for the link for the smaller ones as i will need some more of those, cheers,

Hi all, well for all but a coat of varnish, my first intarsia project is finished,
the stains i made up from mixing waterbased varnish and printer inks, i scolloped the inside edge of the frame to represent waves, and the sand is kiln dried block paving sand, i was after some yellow sand but that was the closest i could get at the time, just waiting for the glue to dry, then the final coat of clear varnish, cheers,

Thank you all for the positive and encouraging comments, i have no idea on what to do next, i will be keeping this one though as it's my first, i'm tempted to do some in different colours with contrasting backgrounds and frames, i like the idea of a seahorse, a starfish might work well too,

Charley, if you try mixing your own stains, make sure you use pigment inks and not dye based ones, a little tip get some eye dropper bottles and droppers and put the primary inks in them, then when you do a mix you can count the number of drops of each colour you have used, so you can keep a record and recreate the colours when you need to, cheers,

Thanks for the tip Mike. Maybe a stupid question, but when you say ''printer ink'' do you mean the ink used in ink cartridges in inkjet printers or do you mean proper printers ink. (Hopefully you know what I mean).

Charley

Hi Charley, the ink used in the cartrides, the ink i used was some left over from my old epson printer, and i thought rather than waste the ink i would experiment with it, you only need the basic 4 pigments, magenta, cyan, yellow and black, and you can virtually make up any shade of colour stain you want, i only recommended the pigment inks as they are more fade resistant than the dye based inks, although with the dye based inks the colours are slighty richer in their colour, both are available in bulk and are relatively cheap, compared to buying pre-coloured stains, plus you only need to mix enough for what you need at the time, it's all good fun, cheers,
