Hello

I have been asked to turn a number of collection plates for use in a church, using European Oak. As these will not be used exclusively for 'silent collections' (notes only), I need to protect the interior of the plates from the wear and tear of coins.
Does anyone have suggestions for a suitable finish that will allow the plates to end up as a light oak colour.

Thanks

I agree with Custard. A drying oil like Chestnut finishing oil or Danish oil is a durable unchippable finish which would be hard wearing enough and serviceable. A wipe with fresh oil will always rejuvenate the finish if it gets scruffy but this is much more difficult with lacquers and surface finishes.

Finishing oil is slightly paler in colour but it'll still be relatively dark rather than light in colour.

I'll second the Chestnut Oils, I made some collection plates a few years ago for my local church and their still immaculate.

I have made quite a few plates and large plate chargers. I have always used Coloron Refined Danish Oil Natural (2-3 coats) and the finish has always been good.
As stated by others when the plates start to dull off a little a quick wipe with a drop of oil on a clean cloth brings them up like new.

Thanks for the advice. Someone (not on the forum) mentioned chestnut hard wax oil. Is this also a good option.
Custard, I am in Waterlooville.

Thanks again.

i quite like the chestnut hard wax oil. I have used it on oak, not turnings though. It looked good. If you do get some, decant half into another bottle, or it can go a bit gloopy before you have used all of it.

Scouserjoe, I'm in Lymington, not that far from you. I don't know if you have the timber for your project, but if not I've got some nice quarter sawn brown oak that I'm happy to donate for the collection plate...the first contribution so to speak!

By the way, if you need any timber machining/dimensioning then I'm always happy to help a fellow forumite.
