I've used something like this in the past. The one I bought had a knurled lock-nut rather than a hex one. I made it a very tight fit and epoxied it in.

These are to order, I believe they will be used to aid fabric repairs and conservation on wool/tapestry embroidery.
 
And there's me thinking you had 'er in doors locked away in the attic darning all the local waifs and strays socks in time for Xmas. :)
