Does anyone know which is the cheaper alternative, all other things being equal.

I'm trying to understand someone's action - I was expecting a burial and it went to cremation.

Brian

I would imagine the costs would be comparable. But there's probably more involved here than cost

Cremation is cheaper than a burial.
Also burial plots are getting harder to find.
Whatever method is used - it's an expensive business.

Rod

Cremation is more common these days, Burial is more expensive and more involved and as Rod says plots are difficult to find. I think parish churches often have spaces for cremation plaques which is an option. Costs certainly mount up a simple burial service about £5k.

Local Church service, cremation, £2500, one of my old schoolmates, last October, no after gathering, or wake/bunfight.

Apparently many 'family run local funeral directors' are no such thing and are actually run by large businesses such as LM funerals and are more expensive than true independant. Also applies to co-op.

I saw a series on the TV, a while ago on how the "Biggies" like the co-op etc, were buying up the family buisiness.
Many of our village carpenters and undertakers have disappeared around here, too.
When my mother died in 2004 the "local" undertaker's had been sold out to a firm 25 miles away.
(Right next to where her father was born in Brompton Regis),
as it turned out. Regards Rodders

How about burial at sea, hire a boat, sail a few miles offshore and dump the body, done. That's going to be my way as the ex wife said she would dance on my grave.

One of my motorcycle rider friends has been in a similar situation in recent past, He tells me He's gonna pour loads of whisky on this persons grave,- "after it's been through my kidneys".

When I was talking to the funeral directors recently they mentioned that a guy had built his own coffin (In fact he made his and hers) and so when the time came, the family got the coffin out of the loft and took it to the undertakers. When they removed the lid they found that he had left loads of notes and poems and songs etc written on the inside of the coffin. It was mainly humorous stuff and the family took great comfort from it. So one cost people on here could save is the cost of the coffin. My Dad actually wanted a cardboard coffin, so that's what we had. It felt a bit odd as it really did just look like a card board box, but that was his wish, so that's what we did. I suspect some of the family thought we were cheapskates but as I said that was his wish. It probably meant there was more cash to go behind the bar for the bun fight (what my dad would have called it!) afterwards.

My mother loved Devon cream teas and when she died we held the wake/bunfight in a small hotel and restuarant bout 300 yards from where she lived as a kid, in Lynton.
She would have loved to have been there, the Cream tea spread was excellent a somewhat comforting end to a sad day!

I knew a guy who was shot out of a cannon. He wanted to go out with a bang. :D

There's even video of it on YouTube.

I am going to get some pallet wood, make a basic crate, lined with felt, and tell the Funeral Directors to use that for a cremation. Do you think it will work?

If they won't play ball, then it's down to my kids to hey-ho to my little 'put-by' account at Nationwide.

Many years ago I ran the website funeraldirector.com which I designed to help independent funeral directors with their web marketing. During that time I learned how expensive the co-op could be, usually 50% more than independents. However a firm called SCI (now operating as Dignity) were much worse and operated as if they were independents. SCI are an american company with a rather controversial history. Well worth googling.
If you look for an independent check for very discreet Dignity branding.

If I get enough notice of my own demise, I'd like to make my own coffin and paint white panels on the sides. I shall then write on it the names of all the people in my life whom I remember fondly. That should put the cat among the pigeons if I forget someone, or indeed, if I reveal all...
:)
