Composite Beams

Hi

Has any one ever made up a composite plywood beam like a glue lam project.

I am interested as I want to do one for my barn conversion and wondered what glue you used and success etc

Structural, yes I know it wont have been stress tested.

The French do not worry about such stuff lol

While the french may not worry about stuff like stress testing. I would as i wouldnt particulally want 2 tonnes plus of oak etc falling on me while im having a cuppa etc.

Much much cheaper to buy them pre made. Once you include the price of materials, glue, the million clamps you will need, the machining and the labour you will be very out of pocket. Also it is NOT safe. You would need to get a specialist engineer involved to specify glues, clamping pressures and laminate grades which would probably cost more alone than buying one off the shelf.

Where is your sense of adventure Lol

The main use I was after it for was to make extending roof beams opposing each other to provide terrace shade without struts to the ground.

Search plywood box beams. The american plywood association have lots of info on sizes and loads

Hi,

I have used Resorcinol Formaldehyde resin glue for this very task, supplied to me by "www. wessex-resins.com"

Other glues I am advised will "creep" under structural stress.
