Cole Jaws:-
Whilst preparing some pieces for a glue up this morning it occurred to me that I often refer to using Cole Jaws for holding my pieces whilst truing them up as well as just reverse turning to finish off bases.
A word of caution to new turners, I do not always rely on the soft anti-mar rubber jaws to hold the pieces if they are such that you can't bring up the tailstock for additional support and safety.
If there is substantial protrusion or the cutting loads are likely to be significant I use home made harder buttons made from Plastic such as an old chopping board or even custom turned wooden ones to suite the work. Even at times resorting to additional Hot melt Glue for irregular pieces to improve stability.
Even when using such you must give due consideration that Cole Jaws are intended for relatively light loads and adjust your cuts and take appropriate precautions to avoid dislodging the piece in work.
For most of my work such as the above the cuts are made in straight boring mode so major forces are pushing the piece into the chuck face rather than just loading the buttons.
