Trying to find out how the finish on this metal work has been done but struggling. I think it may have been done with heat, one of my friends think it's sprayed.

Any suggestions?

maybe, light sprayed salt water with the piece flat, do it for a couple of days then clean and varnish. or maybe spray it then clingfilm.

both maybe, I've not done it before in this context.

Are you sure it's metal looking like wood? I think it might be wood looking like metal.

The red 'castings' could easily be routed from MDF and sprayed - I don't think small furniture designers are likely to find it worthwhile making patterns for castings for the very small numbers of these that would be sold. Have you seen this in the flesh, or just online?

No, just the drawer fronts, there are images on the artist's website that lead me to think it was done with heat. There are additional images here: http://www.eddarchuk.com/clock.html

Have tried contacting Ed via his website but the form does not work.

still looks like rust to me, I assume you think it's heated because it's on what looks like an oven rack, I'd say that's just a steel grate myself, the fact there are 3 pictures which show it getting progressively worse says he's hit it with either flicked water or a spray bottle. he may have used a weak acid or something with an oxygen additive in it (bleach and vinegar for example)

quick google found this guide.

If it's just the drawer fronts I'm afraid anyone but the creator is just going to provide you with guesses. Off the top of my head I could think of three ways this could be created. It could be merely a clever paint effect, sponged on perfectly smooth steel panels.

a further look at the pictures makes me thing it's galvanised sheet, so he may have hit it with muriatic acid (weak hydrocloric mix, you can buy it in B&Q for brick cleaning) in a spray bottle, this will lift the coating and also rust the base metal.

Have copied image to my daughter, who makes jewellry with a similar finish but is also a Chartered Materials Scientist, to see if she knows anything about it. Will report if she does.
